Child with disability attending CSF camp
Child Sight Foundation is implementing a childhood disability study project in Sirajganj, Natore and Bogra districts with the support of International Centre for Eye Health/London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (ICEH)and Christian Blind Mission (CBM). Main project objective is to validate a systematic KIM method to detect children with disabilities in developing countries by comparison with a Household survey in the same districts. Around 3,500 children with different type of disabilities have been identified by KIM and 2,400 children referred for medication, surgery, assistive devices, therapy etc in Sirajganj and Natore districts. All of the referred children are getting services free of cost.
House Hold Survey
House hold survey medical team visited Natore and Bogra districs. Medical team has been finished following activities in last six months:
- 3,118 House hold enumerated
- 3,118 House hold enumerated
- 3,976 Children enumerated
- 3,859 Children examined by paediatrician
- 3,859 children received advice form paed
- 51 Children with disabilities identified by House hold survey team from 2 districts
- 97% attended at clinic from children enumeration
Follow up activities
Treatment, Assistive devices and social inclusion of children with disabilities
CD project has been referred 1001 children with different type of disabilities at various service centres from Natore district. Our main partner referral centres are CSF Child Vision Centre, Dhaka City Hospital, Impact Foundation, BBLM Hospital, Nilphamari, SAHIC, Dhaka, BNSB Sirajganj, Natore Mission Hospital, Shahjadpur Shishu hospital and upazilla level government hospital. Last six months we provided medicine for 200 epilepsy children, 17 wheel chairs, 9 hearing aids, corner chairs, special chairs, parallel bars, crutches, 1 Special shoes, 2 artificial limb 41 cleft lip/palate surgery, 32 club foot plaster and surgery and 304 children with CP receiving therapy at home. We are providing travel cost to the parents and children to come hospital. All children with disabilities are getting free of cost treatment, assistive devices and therapy. We have given lots of service to the patients but still it is 60% from total referred children. The remaining families are not always willing to take up services and these barriers are being explored, both in the qualitative and follow up work

Examination and Referral
253 Key Informants has been identified 1,780 children who have different type of severe disabilities
Recently, the KIM team worked in Natore district to identify children with 4 types of disabilities (visual, hearing, Physical and Neurological impairment. During the KIM activities we have organized 8 Key Informant training with chairman, member, school teacher, Imam, social worker, health worker, people with disabilities, journalist and other community leader who have
We tried to include PWD and woman leader to train on method of identification of CWD. There are 41% woman and around 13% PWD attended at training sessions. Trained KIs worked 3-4 weeks to identify and list CWDs. 253 Key Informants have identified 1,780 children who have different types of disabilities. Around 77% schildren attended from the KI lists. All children attending are examined by Medical team. Medical team made by
- 2 paediatricians,
- 1 counselor
- 1 ENT,
- 1 ophthalmologist,
- 1 audiometrician and other
- 4 camp assistants.
Total 1,531 received medical examination and some medication service from the medical team. Medical team more than 80% referred to CSF and different partner hospital and service centre. KIM team strongly maintaining referral services after the camp. During the case finding activities community sensitization on childhood disabilities, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of CWDs was a very important task for Key Informants. Now more of the people on the project area are educated about CWD.
