The Wahida Matin Memorial CSF Child Vision Centre is a specialized eye hospital for children in the centre of Dhaka city was established in August 2008. The center is supported by Dark and Light Blind Care, Netharlands. The mission of this hospital is to conduct sight restoring cataract surgery provided by well-trained professional staff to children referred at the village level via the Key Informant Method pioneered by CSF. Counseling is provided to the parents or caretakers of blind children prior to and following corrective surgery. In addition, the CSF Hospital conducts epidemiological and qualitative research with support from the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) and conducts frequent program monitoring and evaluation.

The hospital achieves these aims via:

  • The training of community volunteers (Key Informants) to identify blind children at the rural and remote village level
  • Eye examination and diagnosis of all identified blind children at a sub-district level by an ophthalmologist with a mobile team
  • The referral of cataract blind children to the Wahida Matin Memorial CSF Hospital for sight restoring cataract surgery
  • The counseling of parents with blind children prior and post surgery
  • Effective human resource training and management

More generally, CSF works through a public health approach and a unique community outreach process. CSF is passionate in its vision that no child in Bangladesh should be deprived of basic medical treatment including cataract surgery. To actualize this vision, CSF continues to work tirelessly towards the goal of the establishment of a rights based society for blind children at the national level. In order to assist these aims, CSF has links with eye hospitals, paediatric ophthalmologists, and disability-specific service providers and is a key member in relevant forums and associations

The hospital aims to conduct the following activities:

  • 250 blind children have received high quality cataract surgery and post operative vision correction services
  • 500 parents and family members of blind children with cataract have received counseling on child vision including the need for long term follow-up care related to achieving good vision post surgery
  • 10 local NGOs, included in the Child Sight Network, have been trained and encouraged to refer cataract blind children for sight restoring surgery
  • 1000 community volunteers have been trained and encouraged to refer cataract blind children for surgery utilizing the Key Informant Method
